20 Changes for 2010

A majority of North Carolina voters believe state government is failing them. According to Civitas Institute January 2010 polling results, 54 percent of likely voters believe that the state is on the "wrong track," compared to only 31 percent who replied that the state is headed in the right direction. Results Don’t Justify Wake’s Diversity Policy

These developments have obscured an important fact: Wake’s diversity policy has produced disappointing results in the classroom.

20 Changes For 2010: Defense of Marriage Act

In 2009, North Carolina state legislators had the opportunity to enact a constitutional amendment declaring marriage as the union between one man and one woman. However, the Defense of Marriage Act, introduced this session in the House as HB 361 and in the Senate as SB 272, was blocked for a fifth straight session by opponents in committee.

Public Financing Folly

Chapel Hill's voter-owned elections program had its first run in 2009 and is already being heralded as a success. Supporters say the municipal elections achieved all of the aims that taxpayer-funded campaigns are meant to achieve. The only thing that public financing really achieved, however, was victory for the candidates who used it.
